"The Bachelor" wants to meet the Pope

November 1st 2006 15:01
The Bachelor wants to meet the Pope!

"ABC wants ‘The Bachelor’ to meet the Pope. But does the Holy Pontiff want to appear on reality-TV?
When the sun rises at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI has a long list of daily duties. The leader of the Catholic world - numbering more than one billion - will say his daily prayers. He may look out over St. Peter's Square and bless the masses. What he won't do, apparently, is bless ABC's ‘The Bachelor.’
It may sound far-fetched, but at the beginning of the show's ninth season, ‘Bachelor’ executive producer Mike Fleiss put in a special request with the Vatican.

‘We're really trying to get the Pope to be on the show,’ said Fleiss. Fleiss envisioned his newest bachelor, Prince Lorenzo Borghese, 34, being granted an audience with the Pope before handed out his final rose.
‘Wouldn't it be cool,’ said Fleiss in a moment of wishful thinking, ‘to see the Pope praying with the bachelor and giving him guidance to make the right decision?’

Fleiss sent up such a grandiose trial balloon because of Borghese's impressive Roman connections. The 34-year-old New York-based entrepreneur, who runs theRoyal Treatment Pet Spa, a high-end bath, body and skin care line for pets, has a Pope and a cardinal in his family tree: Pope Paul V (Camillo Borghese) and Cardinal Scipiore Borghese. In the 1600's, both men were deeply involved in the completion of St. Peter's Basilica and the overall beautification of Rome, including the family park, the Villa Borghese, Rome's largest public park. And Lorenzo's grandmother, cosmetics giant Princess Marcella Borghese, who died in 2002 at age 90, is buried in the family chapel at Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Still, according to ABC, this impressive lineage has failed to prompt a response from the Vatican. ‘At least not yet,’ said Fleiss. If the production continues to receive the cold Roman shoulder, Fleiss has a plan. ‘We'll sneak the cameras into Vatican Square. We'll do something.’
Better start praying."
