Second Life: What Happened to FIRST Life?
October 30th 2006 13:20
Has anyone heard of Second Life? I’m not a member of this community, and I certainly don’t intend to be one anytime…ever…but Second Life is a 3D online virtual world. SL was started in 2003 and since has had over one million dorks, I mean members, join.
Second Life is set up as a virtual reality- there’s bars to mingle at, ice skating rinks, clothing stores, etc. The world’s currency is the Linden dollar, which you actually have to pay for. So let’s say you wanted to buy “virtual” shoes in Second Life- they would actually cost actual money…for “shoes” that you can’t actually wear and are really just a number of pixels.
You can also have sex with other members of Second Life, and you can buy “sex moves” to please your partner. The owners of Second Life have made $16,000 on sales of the “sex moves” in Second Life.
You also get to choose your “Avatar”- so let’s say you’re fat and pimply: not so in Second Life! You can be tall, blonde, thin, whatever. You can talk to other members online, flirt with them at the bar, walk around, etc, etc, etc.
OK, does anyone see anything wrong with this? What happened to REAL LIFE, you know like FIRST LIFE?! Seriously we’re already communication with people through text messages, IMs, BLOGS, whatever. What happened to actually going out with real people and experiencing real life…real ice skating, real shopping, real love, real sex, whatever. Is this the future? Are we going to be attached to sensors so we can touch people online? What happened to actual life? Is it being replaced by virtual life?
The fact that people are paying to interact in a virtual world…is just sad! So here’s my question: what can we do to advance technology but to prevent us from being hermits and shut-ins who communicate with others only online? What’s to stop the world from coming to that!?
