On Terry McAuliffe

Former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe has been called the most successful political fund-raiser of all time, but it wasn't always as easy as when he hit Hollywood at 22.

Fresh out of college, the New Yorker cold-called powerful MCA-Universal head Lew Wasserman , who invited him right up. McAuliffe writes in his new memoir, "What a Party!" (Thomas Dunne Books, in stores Jan. 24), that he nervously asked, "Mr. Wasserman, I need you to raise $100,000." The movie king replied, "Fine. What else do you want from me?" leaving McAuliffe wondering if he should have asked for more.


Years later, Mayor Bloomberg practically forced money on McAuliffe in his unsuccessful attempt to bring the 2004 Democratic Convention to New York, the politico writes.
