Cancer took another life Saturday, Aug. 1st 2009; this time of the woman that was considered by most people to be the first black supermodel, Naomi Sims, who was only 61 years old.

She first appeared on the cover of Ladies Home Journal in November 1968 and also modeled for clothing designers like Halston, Fernando Sánchez, Teal Traina, and Giorgio di Sant’Angelo.

Naomi also appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine in 1969 and on the New York Times fashion mag in 1967.

After her five year modeling career, she retired and went into the business of making specialized wigs for black women, also writing books on beauty and modeling before her recent death.

R.I.P. Naomi.
